“Musical and rhythmic activities are highly recommended for autistic children. Nonverbal autistics can sometimes sing words that they are unable to speak.”
Emergence: Labeled Autistic by Temple Grandin, p.143

Our Method

Most teachers and therapist already know first hand about the power of music. We have lost count of the number of times an educator has described a special child to us beginning with the phrase, “I have this child who won’t talk but will sing....” or “One of my students, who won’t do much else, loves to sing...” or “I sing entire lessons to keep a child’s attention....” Many others express the regret that they don’t feel they can sing well enough. Let our CDs take the stage fright out of using music in a classroom or therapeutic setting. Our music is based on well researched drills, not mother goose. We won’t mix in lines about cows jumping over the moon, men selling muffins, or mice sprinting up a clock. We avoid the use of nursery rhymes because the special needs mind is often so literal.

These are not nursery rhymes, but speech development lessons put to music.

• Why Music? - The Institute for Music and Neurologic Function states: “New studies are reporting overlapping areas for music and language processing. Rhythm has been found to positively influence brain activity during learning; scientists have reported that after a rhythm sequence is stopped, brain activity occurs in anticipation. ”

Our Four Step Method

A learning song is presented in its entirety.
example: community helpersA.mp3

The song is repeated with key omissions.

The song topic is spoken.

• Cued Response - A second voice is used in our recordings to model the desired response.

• Optimally Paced - A slow tempo in the song with sufficient time for the child to develop a response is essential.

• Urge for Completion - The child's intolerance for something missing is a compelling force.

• Repetition - Do you know of a child who would progress faster if only the family could reinforce his therapy goals daily? How cooperative would families be if the tool offered was not time consuming or labor intensive but provided the needed repetition in an enjoyable, engaging manner?

• Review - Do you ever lament spending so much time in review? Ever think your client has mastered a lesson only to find it later forgotten? By reviewing the material with a child daily, how much more time would you have in session to work on new goals? We provide a fun review for last week’s lesson as well as the lessons from the month before.

The Picture Book

• Complements Music - Each Precision Songs CD has a companion book which illustrates each song (except “Social Questions”). Enjoy the rewards of seeing a child’s eyes light up when he or she sees the visual component to what has been presented musically.

• Repetition of Images - For generalization to occur, we include as many expressions of an object as possible. For example, a monkey is presented three times as a real animal, as a cartoon, and as a toy.

• Concern for Distraction - Each page is clear of distracting stimuli. We put one theme on each page, there are no words, and a large border is used to isolate the illustration. We do not print on the backside of the page so the previous picture is out of view when the book is laid flat.

The Program

• Precision Songs to Comprehend - Learning a song can be pure mimicry, but after the words or phrases are acquired and memorized by children, they soon begin to recognize and comprehend.

• Easy to Use - Instructions already accompany each CD, allowing for review in both the home and classroom settings.

• Versatile - Designed around the autistic client, the materials are useful for a variety of speech concerns, including acquiring English as a second language.

• Developmentally Sequenced - Drawing heavily from established authors, Precision Songs follows the progression used by recognized experts.

• Two Versions - The first CD is available in the Family Version and the Professional Version. The Family Version is produced from an information questionnaire that allows us to record a “Social Questions” song to specifically target a particular child. The Professional CD is not personalized but allows a therapist to model the personal response for any child.
